Animal Care and Use Training and Education
The purpose of the University of Miami Animal Care and Use training site is to:
- Provide the mandatory Basic training for all personnel who come into contact with research animals
- Serve as a resource for faculty/staff engaged in research with laboratory animals.
Basic Instruction
At the University of Miami all investigators and staff who use laboratory animals in their research and teaching are required to complete Animal Welfare instruction before beginning their research and every 4 years thereafter. The University of Miami IACUC Animal Welfare Courses are hosted by The CITI Program.
If you are new to the University of Miami and required to complete a Lab Animal Welfare Course, follow the link to www.citiprogram.org to Register for a CITI course.
If you already have a username and password from:
- The previous IACUC training site at www.researchtraining.org, you may use it to access the tutorial at www.citiprogram.org
- A previous CITI Program course (e.g., Human Subjects Protection), you may use it to access the Lab Animal Welfare Training Program at www.citiprogram.org.
Investigators and Staff are required to complete the following elements of the UM Lab Animal Welfare Training Program:
- "Working With the IACUC "
- "University of Miami, OH&S and SOPs "
- Electives for the species that are most relevant to your research or teaching roles at the University.
IACUC Members are further required to complete:
- "Essentials for IACUC Members" designed specifically for new IACUC members.

- Working With Cats in Research Settings.
- Working With Dogs in Research.
- Working With Swine in Research Settings.
- Working With Non-human Primates in Research Settings.
